Rapid Policy Update from OCC: Bill 47, Making Ontario Open for Business Act, 2018

Rapid Policy Update:
Bill 47, Making Ontario Open for Business Act, 2018

On October 23, 2018, the Government of Ontario’s announced Bill 47, Making Ontario Open for Business Act, 2018. The announcement included a near full repeal of Bill 148, dissolution of the Ontario College of Trades, and improvements to the journeyperson-to-apprentice ratio.

This is a huge advocacy win on behalf of our 60,000 members in 135 communities across the province. The OCC applauds the government for taking swift action to introduce many critical reforms that we have persistently advocated for on behalf of Ontario business.

What do these changes mean for Ontario business?

  1. Minimum wage paused at $14 per hour.

  2. Partial repeal of scheduling provisions.

  3. Removal of equal pay for equal work.

  4. Returning to previous calculation of public holiday pay.

  5. Return to previous union certification policies.

  6. Amended personal emergency leave.

  7. Maintain domestic or sexual violence leave.

  8. Maintain paid vacation expansion.

  9. Apprenticeship ratios set at 1:1.

  10. Dissolution of the Ontario College of Trades.

The OCC is encouraged by the labour market reforms announced today and looks forward to continuing to work with the Ontario government to support economic prosperity and business competitiveness across the province.

If you have any further questions please contact Daniel Safayeni, Director of Policy.

A Policy Update from St. Lawrence College

We are excited to share news of a new College-wide policy with you. Effective Monday, October 15, 2018 St. Lawrence College is going smoke-free.

As a smoke-free college, smoking or vaping tobacco or cannabis is prohibited at all campus locations. This includes all indoor and outdoor areas, and in vehicles on campus. The smoke-free initiative includes any person on campus, whether they are students, staff, faculty, subcontractors and/or their employees, and visitors. All events hosted on SLC campuses will also be smoke-free.

In planning for this new policy, we scheduled increased maintenance for the peripheral areas of each campus and if you visit us, you will see new signage posted that is intended to remind people the campus is now smoke free.

We will gladly answer any questions you might have, and I encourage you to contact us at smokefree@sl.on.ca if you’d like to discuss this. Lastly, for details on the St. Lawrence College smoke-free policy, visit our website here.

Sincerely,

Glenn
